Three years in, the Indigenous Reading Circle has become one of the quietest, most essential rooms in our community. A reflection on what it has taught us — and where it goes next.
Listening as practice
When Sara Whitepine first proposed a circle centered on contemporary Indigenous fiction, we didn't know what shape it would take. What grew was something we couldn't have planned: a slow, careful gathering that asks readers to sit with discomfort, complexity, and joy in equal measure. The books we've read together have reshaped how the rest of our programming feels.
"The land has stories. Reading these books is one way of listening." — Sara Whitepine
The circle meets monthly in Vancouver and online. New members are always welcome — no prior reading required, only the willingness to begin.
